Farm insurance is required if you engage in any type of farm activity or own farm land. The personal liability you get with home or tenant insurance, does not cover liability claims arising from farm activities. When you buy a farm policy you receive both farm liability and personal liability if you insure your house on the same policy.
Most farm policies inlcude the residence and personal contents, personal buildings (not for farm or commercial use) and liability. Coverage for farm buildings, machinery, tools, parts, livestock, feed, grain, and chemicals can also be added. Contact us to find out the insurance options available.
Larger livestock operations, such as hog, chicken and dairy operations require specialized insurance. We have a great selection of markets to help you with your specialized farming operation.
An important item to consider is Voluntary Fire Fighting Coverage. Fire Department charges vary with rural municipalities. Recent claims for fire department calls have resulted in charges between $5000 and $10000 depending on the severity of the fire and the number of fire departments that respond . More than one fire department may respond resulting in charges from both fire departments. Check with your Rural Municipality to determine the fire department charges for your area.
Custom farming and other business operations may require changes to your farm coverage. Most insurance companies limit the amount of custom farming that can be done by farmers. Exceeding these limits can jeopardize coverage. Coverage can often be extended to many business pursuits and commercial exposures. Please inform your broker of any of these activities.
